Placing the Adsense ads
How do you make money with Adsense? By getting clicks, right? What is the most important factor when it comes to getting Adsense clicks? One is the placement of the ads. Most people inclined to click on Adsense ads will do so right when they arrive to your website. No offense, but if they don't find your site interesting enough at first glance, their attention will go elsewhere - hopefully to the Adsense ads. So this is why your ads should be placed at eye level. Take a quick glance at your site. Did you notice the ads? Did they attract your attention?
Depending on the design of your website, what placement is more likely to get you Adsense clicks? With ads to the left, to the right or in the middle?
Looks of your Adsense ads
Do you want your Adsense ads to blend into the content on the website? Or do you want them to stand out? What ad design will produce more clicks? The answers to these questions is something that only you know. It totally depends on your site. A few things are for sure though: The ads should look good on your site, they should go with the design. Adsense ads shouldn't ever be annoying. You could use the same link color on the ads as the other links on your website or you could use the standard blue color.
Don't make the Adsense ads too big. This will only deter people from clicking on them as they will seem daunting or give the impression of being typical ads. The good thing about Adsense is that they provide ads that are not typical. Instead they're highly targeted. Use this to your advantage.
Adsense for search
Adsense for search boxes is a cool feature. It allows you to put a Google search engine on your webpage and will publish ads related to visitor search results. Adsense for search won't be suitable for all your pages - put it on a page where people are likely to do a search.
How to get more clicks and traffic overall
Be sure to build lots of pages! Unique quality content, optimized for both visitors and search engines. Do some keyword investigation for each site. What are people typing into the search engines? Make each page unique but related to the main topic of the site. This way people will find your tier two and tier three pages through search engines. Don't forget to put Adsense ads on all of them. Experiment with different placements and perhaps colors. Google will like your site more if you update it frequently, so don't forget that part.
If you notice that one of your pages gets more hits than the others, why not make an entirely new homepage about the topic it deals with? For example, if you have a food related site and your article about pasta gets the biggest amount of hits, why not make a pasta site and put a link to it from your old site?
Adsense click reports
Adsense has an excellent ad channel report feature. Use it! For every ad you put up, make sure you've specified what channel it belongs to, that is, the name of the page. Let's say you have a website about animals. Make different channels for different animals, e.g. horses, dogs, birds. After a while when you return to the Adsense report you will be able to see what pages brought you the biggest amount of clicks. This might give you a clue to what ad placements and/or colors are more effective. Or what pages are simply more popular.
